The days of etno music are in no way
over. Åsa Jinder (born October 9, 1963) is known to ESC-fans
as the key fiddler who helped Secret Garden to victory in 1995. For
many years, she has been one of the most active folk musicians in
Sweden, being the youngest person ever to be dubbed "riksspelman"
(National Player of Folk Music), a very prestigious title, in 1979.
Her first album was released in 1981 and since then twenty more
have followed. Her latest project was to release an album of newly
written Swedish folklore, and for this project she also hired a
number of well-known Swedish voices. Most notably she was helped
by Cajsa-Stina Åkerström (born August 16, 1967).
Cajsa-Stina is the daughter of one of Sweden's best known and respected troubadours, the late Fred Åkerström (1937-1985). For a long time, Cajsa-Stina chose not to embark on an artistic career and got herself a degree in archeology and was quite happy with that. However, in 1994, her debut single Fråga stjärnorna (Ask the stars) was a big hit and since then several singles and a few albums have followed - all with moderate sales but with a lot airplay. Her usual style is the light hearted pop song that tells a short history, and before getting hired by Åsa Jinder, she had not been singing folklore. The song Av längtan till dig existed for a few years only as an instrumental tune under the name Ömhet (Tenderness). Åsa really liked the song her colleague Jan Krantz had composed and decided to write lyrics to it when a friend of hers was getting married. Lyrics which tell about the difficult search of true love. This was in 1999, but it was not until 2001 that the song was recorded and released. The album called Folkmusik på svenska went straight up to the top of the album charts and Av längtan till dig topped the televote based chart Svensktoppen. | |
